April's Note

You are so amazing! She is so close to having the baby! Adam and Carolyn are going to be the best parents and I feel so grateful to share this experience with them. Happy sleepless nights!!

Hi, this is Cassie

hey ! im here in the room with carolyn and adam... shes pushing right now but baby nash is refusing to come out ... but carolyn doing a good... this is the first baby im gonna see be born!!! well i'll be here to catch the baby with my softball mitt!!!

Getting close now!

Unbelievable. After the epidural, Carolyn & I were able to catch about 2 hours sleep between 1:30am and 3:30am. She's almost 10cm dilated now (9+) and so preparations are underway for "the pushing".

Apparently the estimates for a first-time mother is for about 1 hour of pushing.

It looks like Baby Nash may beat the dawn after all. That means that the winning day for the baby pool is October 15. The question now is weight. We have bets ranging from 7 lbs even all the way up to 9 lbs 12 oz. We'll see. The pot is $85.

Carolyn seems to be in good spirits. The contractions seem to have done their work, without the pain involved before the epidural. Of course, the real show has yet to start.

Hard to believe that we may have our first son in the next couple of hours. Carolyn & I have even finalized the name...

Houston, we are ready for countdown

Well, it's been a few hours, but at 10:30PM we went back to the hospital. Carolyn's contractions were painful, lasting up to 2 minutes, and happened every 4 minutes.

Well, she's now 6cm dilated, and with an epidural in place, she's finally comfortable again. Looks like we may have Baby Nash before sunrise.

I'm working on posting a picture. It turns out when the wireless LAN is down in a hospital, NO ONE knows anything about it. Oh well. I snaked an ethernet jack...

What about the marsupial approach?

I mean, did we really give that a good shot before going placental? Honestly. Baby comes out tiny, crawls out himself, and then goes to a pouch with a nipple. 6 months later, full grown joey.

That seems like a good approach. Plus, you have the pouch all those other times you are not using it for a baby.

Unfortunately, the only mammal smart enough to do this in North America is the Opossum. Oh well.

Contractions are very intense, and up to 2 minutes long. Coming down to more like 6 minutes apart.

Carolyn had some dinner - chicken soup. Graham cracker or two. It's been a long day already.

Long night ahead?

Carolyn seems to be in the same pattern she's been in all day... it doesn't seem to be progressing, although the contractions are getting longer and more painful.

Will this end up being a 2am run to the hospital?

A little music, a little wine...

One of the recommendations from the hospital for early labor was actually to break out a glass of wine to relax the mom-to-be. Clearly they did not state that the dad-to-be could not have one also.

So, uncorked is a 7 year old Pinot, "J", which was very nice.

Carolyn is still experiencing contractions, ranging from 30-40s ones every 4-5 minutes, to longer ones that usually follow gaps of up to 10 minutes.

Bath time for Baby

Well, not quite. Bath time for Carolyn. Trying to get her to relax in the tub as the contractions come and go.

Darwin desperately wants to jump in the tub too, but we won't let him.

Still same timing on contractions. About 7 minutes apart, 60s each.

Still slogging it out

Contractions are farther apart now, but much more intense. Every 7-9 minutes, but now for more like 90s, and much more difficult for Carolyn.

Still, good to be at home. Newton & Darwin have become very protective of Carolyn. They're staying close.

Close but no cigar

We're home now. Talked to the doctor, and although the labor has progressed some, Carolyn's not at the active labor stage yet. Still early labor, about 5-7 minutes apart. So, rather than break her water immediately, we decided to go home, relax, and let nature take it's course.

We stopped by Erik's Deli Cafe, which is sentimental since several of our first lunch dates were at the Erik's near Apple.

We're going to eat and relax this afternoon, and get ready for the big show.

This blogging thing is working out quite well - can you believe El Camino Hospital has a free wireless LAN available?

Maybe take a walk?

Looks like we're not quite ready for the show yet. We're debating whether or not to check out the hospital and to take a walk, wait for contractions to get closer together & more intense.

Of course, her water has not broken yet. If that happens, things will move pretty quickly.

Dr. Carl Nash arrives...

New moon rising is good. This may take a while, I recommend lunch to those who can.

Lynn arrives at the hospital

Welcome to my new baby grandson. We are anxiously awaitng your arrival. I am sitting here watching you mommy and daddy wonder how much longer it will take to see your smiling face.

Is it the real deal?

Checked into hospital. Carolyn's been monitored for over 1/2 hour.

Seems like contractions are slowed down a bit. About 3-4cm dilated, 90-100% effaced. Not sure if we should stay or go home and wait some more.

We're going to walk around some, get Carolyn out of bed and standing some more. We'll reassess in 1/2 hour.

The hospital is pretty empty - we're like the only couple here in maternity. As a result, we have double the nurses and attention.

Off to the races...

... I think we're going to the hospital now. Contractions getting more severe.

Funny anecdote. During this process, the UPS guy delivers these curtain rods for the living room we've been waiting for. Custom made, Iron, 13 foot. Anyway, Carolyn insists that rather than help her, I unpack the rods and make sure they got the order right. Very cute.

Well, the good news is that the rods are beautiful, the contractions are 5 minutes apart, and we're going to go to the hospital.

That means Baby Nash is on the way, and will likely come home to a gorgeous new set of curtains in the living room.

Shane here

It's very exciting! I spoke to Carolyn's belly and said I was anxious to meet him. Turns out baby likes dancing to Abba's Dancing Queen.

Still at the house. We're waiting to see the regularity of contractions before we bee line to the hospital.

Pause in the action...

So we're not off to the hospital so fast after all. Carolyn had a brief pause in the action (12 minutes), so we're going to keep timing and waiting. No rush to be locked in a bed being monitored.

It's all very exciting, and a little bit silly at times.

Close to the show?

Contractions are still not super regular, but they are getting closer together. About 3-5 minutes apart now.

Car is packed. Carolyn is exceptionally good natured. Shane is helping with everything.

Carolyn is sitting on her yoga ball, Newton is staying by her side.

We may be close to the show soon.

Just getting started....

I'm just getting this blog set up. Carolyn woke me up this morning at about 6:15 am, complaining of pains. She wasn't sure it was labor, because it was so different than the normal Braxton Hicks contractions. Still, after some timing of regular intervals about 5-7 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute, we figured it out.

I cancelled my meetings at work today, called the doctor. We're waiting a bit longer to go to the hospital, but it could be soon. Got everything packed up, got Carolyn & me some food. Timing the contractions.

8:11 - 8:12
8:19 - 8:20
8:25 - 8:26
8:31 - 8:32

It's like clockwork.

Once we go to the hospital, it may be a while until I can post again.
